Meet Michael: Starts at Home Day 2025
Today we are celebrating Starts at Home Day by highlighting the positive difference supported housing makes to people’s lives.
Meet Michael, a resident at one our retirement living communities. He spent thirty years travelling the world working in tea, coffee and copra plantations. He is now retired and living a healthy and independent life at one of our schemes in Shrewsbury, with extra support available if he needs it.
Since moving in Michael has made new friends and enjoys nipping into town on his electric wheelchair. He is supported at the scheme by his Retirement Living Officer, Andy.
Andy said: “I enjoy getting to know the residents and them getting to know me. It gives them the confidence to trust and approach me directly if they have any questions or just want to chat, I believe it is very important to be a listening ear and someone who cares. I love hearing about their history and the amazing lives they have lived.”
Organised by The National Housing Federation, Starts at Home is a day of action that aims to ensure that people who need extra support will always have a safe home that meets their needs.
