Money Matters: Make the most of free bus travel for children and some great savings in August
The summer holidays seem to do two things at once – fly by and feel like they’re lasting forever!
Whether you've already ticked off a family break away, exhausted your list of activities or you're wondering how you'll keep the kids entertained for the rest of August there's no escaping the fact that the school holidays can add extra pressure on the household budget.
The good news is there are some ways to make your money go a little further.
In this week’s Money Matters column, we’re focusing on the government’s Great British Savings campaign, which includes free bus travel on participating bus services for children aged five to 15 in August.
The initiative aims to help families make the most of the school holidays while reducing travel costs, making it easier and more affordable for families to access attractions, activities, sports clubs and cultural events this summer.
Many attractions, activities and family venues across England are also taking part in the wider summer savings programme.
To check out what’s going on local to you in Shropshire, Staffordshire and Telford & Wrekin, head over to the Summer Savings website, and type in your postcode – and you’ll be shown a list of participating venues and other discounts that are available close to home.
In terms of free bus journeys, some of our region’s local authorities have highlighted availability of the free bus travel scheme in their communications. They can be found at:
While schemes like these won't solve the wider cost of living challenges many families continue to face, they can make a difference during the summer holidays when food, childcare, and entertainment costs often increase.
If money is tight, remember you don't have to struggle alone. Speaking to someone early can help you maximise your income, check you're receiving all the support you're entitled to and prevent small money worries from becoming bigger problems.
At Housing Plus Group, our Money Matters team is here to provide our customers with free, confidential support. Whether you need help budgeting, managing debt or navigating the cost of living, we’re here to help.
